iPhone 4 Launched in South Africa - pricing announced. UPDATED

Well, the iPhone 4 launched last night on both MTN and Vodacom. And while the carriers could get a fancy launch party right, listing actual pricing in a simple and understandable way still seems beyond them!

So I’m making this post to combine iPhone pricing I’ve found on the web into one easy to see place:

MTN - Link to MTN prices

MyBroadband.co.za lists the following pricing for MTN (e1Ace on Twitter pointed out that MTN confirms on their site it includes R200 airtime):

iPhone 4 16 GB on a 150 MB Internet bundle, R200 Airtime – R379 per month
iPhone 4 16 GB on a 300 MB Internet bundle, R200 Airtime – R429 per month
iPhone 4 32 GB on a 150 MB Internet bundle, R200 Airtime – R429 per month
iPhone 4 32 GB on a 300 MB Internet bundle, R200 Airtime – R479 per month

HOWEVER, in their forums, BiltonGuy (awesome nick!) says the following:

“Just got mine from an MTN store.
MTN 200 @ R379pm (comes with free iphone 16gb, R200 airtime, 25 sms’s, and 150mb per month)
I wouldnt call that a rip off at all….”

So this implies that the prices above actually also include airtime and SMSs, not just bandwidth. If this is the case, then it’s actually very good pricing! I’ll confirm this as soon as I can

According to iMod.co.za, they received a full pricelist from Cellucity via email:

This is just an extract - for the rest of the pricelist, which includes both cash pricing and financed pricing, you can go to their post here. It also includes pricing on the 32gb iPhone 4.

According to Aki Anastasiou on Twitter:

“16GB iPhone 4 pricing. Vodacom R929pm, Talk 500, 500 free min, 250MB data, 100 SMS’s ~ MTN R479pm, Anytime 200, 300 MB data, R200 airtime”

So this implies that their are also bundles that include some data, which is not mentioned or not applicable on the Cellucity pricelist.

CASH / PAY AS YOU GO PRICING:

Update: Just got emailed Pay as you Go pricing from Incredible Connection - and iPhone 4 16GB: R7999 iPhone 4 32GB: R8999 - so it’s actually slightly cheaper than before.

So far there is no confirmed pricing for Pay as you go / cash pricing. The best I’ve got is once again Aki Anastasiou on Twitter:

“Rough estimate on iPhone4 prices without contracts.32GB R 10 400 & 16GB R 9000. These are not confirmed prices but whispers.Pssst!”

If this is accurate, the case prices are not great unfortunately :(

How do these prices compare with previous pricing?

Well, I (Paul) got my iPhone 3Gs 16gb at R3600 inc vat Cash Pay-in on a Talk 240, in September 2009. Henk got his 3Gs 32gb for R4800 March 2010, on a Talk 130 Plus. So basically, the prices on contract have already come down dramatically - yay for competition!

I’m going to head through to the different retail stores now and see what I can find - please post in the comments if you find any information!
